This Creative Gathering invites you to explore the connections between the two identities of Artist and Resident…

We want to gather and share our experiences or ideas about:

Artists in residence            

What kind of attachment or role is possible?

Artists as residents           

How do we act and how are we perceived?

Artists and residents          

What work and interactions are occurring?

At the gathering we want to create a ‘scratch’ exhibition that expresses our different perspectives on any of these aspects of the Artist/Resident dynamic.

Everyone (artist or not) is invited to come ready to make and exhibit a brief creative ‘statement’ in relation to one or more of these elements. The statement could be a one or a combination of a short piece of text, an image or photograph, a brief piece of music or performance, a poem, an object - any of which could be titled. You may want to prepare something and bring it with you, or upload an image, piece of writing, audio clip or short film to our Creative Gathering webpage beforehand (insert URL here). It is also fine to arrive on the night and to be spontaneous…

These statements will be curated ‘live’ for our scratch exhibition by Rene Viner and Lee Ashton. If you have any questions about the format please contact them via Chris Higgins at The Map (chris@mapconsortium.com).

However, the key parameters are:

• If your statement is performative, remember that there will be lots going on at the same time, and that it needs to be really brief (it can be repeated)
• Basic materials will be available (e.g. paper, pens, etc) but if you need something special or special technology, please bring it with you
• We’re in the Friends Meeting House, not a studio, so can’t make a huge mess – no Pollock inspired murals please…
• This is a scratch exhibition to provoke thought and discussion – your statement could be the proposal for a ’piece’ or something very simple - it doesn’t have to be the perfect finished article

As inspiration we will hear from three artists offering their perspectives on the three elements (above) including Simon Grennan, currently undertaking one of the two Citizen Power residencies.
