Citizen Power: Peterborough

Responses to 'Resources of inspiration...'

A sunny Monday evening saw the second Creative Gathering, this time in the Key Theatre. As the front of this ning says - the conversation and thinking centred around 'place-making' and thinking about how creative practice and interventions can connect people together, connect people to Peterborough and help to address locally raised issues like, older people feeling socially excluded. What did you think or feel about it?

With the music of the fun-fair next door providing the backdrop, we asked what can Peterborough learn from ‘successful’ creative cities? What is ‘success’ anyway? And where are these places?

Any thoughts, ideas or responses?

This is 'the Ning' then???!!!! A word I never I knew existed until this week - a bit like the great, warm, fabulous and creative group of people I encountered on Monday evening. For weeks I have sat at the cathedral, scratching my head, wondering where all the culture is - who could we approach to work together on events, exhibtions etc, then Monday came... A very inspirational evening even though at first I wondered what on earth was going on & why on earth was I there. Timing, fate - LOVE IT!
It was really encouraging to see so many people at the gathering and useful connections seemed to be made. With many artists and practitioners already engaged in work specifically related to Peterborough Place-making in the room - such as View Five's 'Finding Peterborough' project, Eastern Angles' Platform Peterborough performances, NIE's 'Stories from the middle of town' and ripples from Blok Collective's recent festival at The Green Backyard - a rich range of ideas emerged in response to the valuable stimulus from Ruth Nutter of Encounters. I'm interested to know whether people in conversation were able to access this expertise and swap ideas about both useful practice and the challenges of place-making work and indeed whether others gained a new perspective on what it involves. There were certainly some wise provocations collected in the imaginary" Smooth Guide to Place-Making' - and these and other notes from the meeting will be posted up on this ning tomorrow. We also had a great briefing meeting for Experiments in Place making last night attended by Lisa and Cate from the neighbourhood management team and four new artist partnerships have been launched, with a further three still up for grabs.
I know, whole new world isn't it! Welcome to the 'ning'.

So pleased you enjoyed monday night so much - and it was great to have such an open invitation to think about using the cathedral for artistic possibilities. I was learning yesterday how there is a lack of venues/performance/exhibition spaces in Peterborough... so brilliant!

Would have been nice to know it was even happening. Publicity needs to be ramped up if CP is going to be a success in Peterborough
Hi everyone - attached is the record of the comments, ideas and suggestions you all contributed to the different investigations we explored as part of the gathering. Lots to absorb and some thought provoking questions and advice. I particularly like how everyone co-authored the "Smooth guide to place-Making". Enjoy and i'd be interested to know which contributions stand out for you...

Hi Christine

The Creative Gatherings are an open meeting designed for artists and creative practitioners in Peterborough to meet, network and share ideas on how the arts can play a role in the future of the city and be strengthened in the process. If you are an artist or know someone who would like to come along do let me know and spread the word - georgina.chatfield@rsa.org.uk
