Do you or your community group have an idea that could make Peterborough a greener place? Or perhaps you’d like to do something, but aren’t sure what?

Citizen Power, Peterborough in Transition and PECT are holding a competition to help people like you develop ideas, find others to work with, get expert advice and win money to get your idea off the ground.

We’re particularly interested in ideas that fall into these themes: Energy, Food, Travel & Waste – but we’re open to other ideas too!

The competition is a two stage process, starting with a half-day workshop at The Green Backyard (see below for address) on Saturday 3rd March between 10:00am and 4:00pm. During this workshop we’ll help you meet others interested in the same idea, and match you with expert mentors who can help you refine your idea.

You’ll then have two or three weeks to develop your idea, before a second event (date to be confirmed, but it will be a weekday evening towards the end of March). At this event you’ll have the opportunity to describe your project to a panel of experts who will decide which projects can receive a £500 grant.

To win money for your idea, you or a representative from your group will need to be able to come to both of these events. Because we want to give everybody a chance to win funding, we’re unable to accept people who have taken part in previous Citizen Power funding workshops – sorry!

We have limited places, so you need to register if you’re interested. To register or just find out more, email jamie.young@rsa.org.uk with a little bit of information about you or your community group, or telephone 020 7451 6935. Get in touch!

The Green Backyard is on the corner of London Road and Oundle Road, opposite the Peterborough United football ground. Further directions are on their website: http://www.thegreenbackyard.com/directions

Citizen Power in Welland:

On the first weekend in October 2011, Sustainable Citizenship hosted a workshop in partnership with Cross Keys Homes in Welland to develop residents’ ideas for community projects to improve the local environment in Peterborough.

Luke Payn, local artist, photographer and member of Blok Collective, facilitated the workshop with support from Cross Keys Homes and PECT. Luke led workshop participants through a series of activities designed to get them thinking about innovative solutions to environmental challenges in their local area.

Stay tuned for an update on the projects that are emerging from this workshop, as well as details of another workshop to be held in Peterborough soon!

Hi Wayne - the group that you contributed to won a grant to develop the community garden at Honeyhill Childrens' Centre in Paston. This money was paid to the centre some time ago and we are supporting the centre staff and parents to put it to good use.  The rules for the next competition are stated in the above invitation. We're focused on helping those that haven't yet had the opportunity to take part. Cheers, Jamie

Re:- Recycled Christmas Tree Competition - 2010

Yes it’s that time of year again when we would like to promote recycling at Christmas amongst the Primary Schools in Peterborough. We are pleased to announce that this year we will be working in Partnership with Peterborough United, to promote environmental sustainability in the community.
This year’s competition is to design and make a recycled Christmas tree and decorations using “recyclable” materials. This will be held in at the Peterborough United Ground on Thursday 9th December 2010 at 10.00am. If you would like your Peterborough Primary School to enter the competition then please contact me on kirsty.martin@peterborough.gov.uk; entries need to be in my 26 November 2010

I think that Volkswagen bin is fab and we should put a couple in our parks for entertainment value - it would certainly help kids learn about their environment.

Great bin Kirsty - hope they are popular! Here's another fun bin that Volkswagen developed as part of a campaign.

Let's go one step further in recycling in Peterborough to try to reach our goal of becoming the Environmental Capital of the UK. Don't landfill it, recycle it on the go.....Your empty plastic bottles, cans and glass bottles. Coca Cola working in partership with Peterborough City Council to try to acheive 65%+
