The citizen's contract

In an article originally published in OpenDemocracy, Sam McLean, Director of Public Participation at RSA Projects asks how ideas like "active citizenship" and "civic virtue" can be turned into practical realities.

Britain is not broken

Hardly a publication known for its gooey-eyed liberal optimism, an article in the latest copy of The Economist is right to argue that while damaged by excessive individualism, our…

Blogosphere reaction to scoping document

Blogger Blogging in a Boggy Place has a thoughtful response to the launch of our Citizen Power in Peterborough report. Blogger Ian Shanks is generally positive about the initiative but has one big caveat:

It does smack of a project that will appeal to the usual suspects within the local establishment rather than a grass… Continue

Hello Will.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Feel free to call on the expertise and thank you for inviting me to the Citizen Power community.

Building Community is an online showcase of community organisations and local authorities undergoing the transfer of land and building assets to the community.

The films are made in conjunction with the Asset Transfer Unit who offer support and advice to councils and community organisations that are interested in transferring ownership of council-owned assets to the community.

We are active on Twitter and Facebook the ATU also have a Twitter presence.

That is very true, Will. To keep people motivated they must be rewarded and this is why Timebanking and a Knowledge Bank/city-wide suggestions scheme have merits. We only need a few motivated and dedicated individuals in each community to make a real difference. Community initiatives can fail when certain individuals leave due to other commitments or if they simply feel exploited. Major partners such as PCC must understand sustainable citizenship can be undermined by the actions of their staff, whether consciously or unconsciously. But citizens must also be willing to organise themselves and make their voices heard.

Thanks for adding the Open Studios event, Will. It is worth noting, though, that it runs over the 3 weekends only not during the week. The calender to the right of the events page highlights week days too. (Events form doesn't provide option for multiple dates)Sorry to be a pedant but would hate for potential audience to be irritated by being mis-informed.

Hello Will, thank for allowing me in!

Sam McLean should hopefully be visiting the EAP allotment on 9th June, but we are still waiting for him to confirm. If you and Jocelyn wish to visit that day, or if another would be convenient then please let me know asap. The allotment is at it's best at the moment so now would be a great time to see it.

Timebanking is slowly taking off here in Peterborough. A scheme is already well underway in Parnwell and Cross Keys homes are setting one up in Westwood/Ravensthorpe. I am hoping that Dogsthorpe will be the next area to have a scheme. These schemes are of great importance to allow those who participate to be paid in some form for their community efforts, thus making such activity more sustainable. This is s often overlooked. I often hear the question: how do we get more people involved? Well, the answer is to show their efforts are valued and Timebanking offers a way to do this. EAP hopes to make Timebanking part of a community banking network which may also include LETS, credit unions and a local currency.

Much of what we need to do already exists in order to make Peterborough sustainable in community and environmental terms so we don't have to re-invent the wheel. We just have to make these schemes work.

Looking foward to working with you. Cheers!
